Engraved frontis. port & and engraved printer’s vignette on title, 8 p.l. Thick 8vo, modern vellum-backed boards, uncut. Later edition (1st ed.: 1745) of this noteworthy collection of biographies of prominent men and women including Aldrovandi, Bacon, J. Bernoulli, Boerhaave, Boyle, Brahe, Bruno, Cardano, Descartes, Copernicus, Galileo, Gassendi, Leibniz, Newton, Spinoza, Viviani, and many others in other fields including literature. Buonafede (1716-93), Italian philosopher, taught theology at Naples and was one of the leading members of the Celestins, his religious order.
