Compass and pocket string sundial, German

German pocket string sundial with compass, also called horologium viatorium or Reisesonnenuhr. Gilt brass, signed, dated, named: V(lrich) S(chniep), 1586, VIATORIVM. See Figs. 13 & 14 in A. Rohde's Die Geschichte der wissenschaftlichen Instrumente, Leipzig 1923. Adjustable for ele(vatio) pol(i) or terrestrial latitude, 42-52 degrees. The cities listed in the Tabula latitudinis regionum,on the cover,differ somewhat from the cities listed in Fig. 13 of the Munich 1582 specimen. The maker is from Munich.
