Duplessis-Valade/Portrait of Benjamin Franklin
Portrait of Franklin, in three-quarter right profile, dressed in a coat with fur collar. The following description of the portrait is found below: The portrait is from one of a series of Illustrious Americans, painted by Duplesis, and engraved by Thompson. This engraving on wood is from the hand of John Cleghorne of Islington.
[Note: Engraving most likely after a ca. 1785 oil painting, probably by French portrait painter Jean Valade (1709-1787), which is after a 1778 painting by Joseph Siffred Duplessis (1751-1831).]
