Portrait of Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)
Reproduction of engraving done ca 1870 by Fr. L. Meyer, after the painting "Galileo in Prison" done in 1864 by the German painter Carlo Piloty (better known as Karl Theodor von Piloty, 1826-1886), showing Galileo imprisoned in solitary.
Piloty was a German born in Munich. He was part of the Gründerzeit movement and specialized in large-format historical paintings of emotional scenes. Painted the Death of Caesar as well as, Mary Queen of Scots Receiving Sentence of Death, Nero Among the Ruins of Rome, the Death of Alexander the Great (unfinished).
