Rule, folding, Hockley Abbey
Four-fold rule, from Murray Gell-Mann collection. With trademark stamp of Hockley Abbey, a mark of the manufacturer J. Rabone, Birmingham, England. Folds around circular brass joint at middle and small lateral hinges towards ends. Scaled differently on each side. Outside marked "London" scaled in English inches and centimeters. Inside top scaled in archines (Russ.: arshin) and werschocks (Russ.: vershok); bottom scaled with German foot (Ger.: Rheinfuss). These rules were typically made of boxwood, although this one does not bear the stamp "warrented boxwood." Date unknown.
