One of a matched pair of globes with polychromed wooden stands, made by the globemaker Mattheus Greuter (b. 1556) in Rome. The terrestrial globe is dated 1632; the celestial globe, 1636. Purchased by the Institute from an unidentified noble family in Italy in 1956. The globes are described in detail in Stevenson, Terrestrial and Celestial Globes, v. 2, pp. 54ff (New Haven, 1921).
