Portrait of Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) and Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier (1743-1794)

Engraved portraits done by James Caldwell (1739-1819), entitled "Chemical Philosophers of the present Day." Portrait of Priestley after a painting done by John Opie (1761-1807), and portrait of Lavoisier after a painting done by Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825).

[Note: The three-quarter profile of Lavoisier is taken from David's famous 1788 double portrait of Lavoisier and his wife; the original oil painting is part of the New York Metropolitan Museum's collection.]
