Map of Italy by John Speed in London, 1676 (date in pencil note on reverse). Speed was the most important mapmaker in England in the 17th century. The print is probably a folio from the 1676 edition of his atlas, Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain...together with a Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World, although a cartouche indicates the map's availability by London booksellers. Top borders present small city views and the arms of the Pope and of Venice. Side borders have illustrations of local costumes.
