Full title: LA FIGURE DE LA TERRE, DETERMINEE PAR LES OBSERVATIONS DE MESSIEURS DE MAUPERTUIS, CLAIRAUT, CAMUS, LE MONNIER,...M. L'ABBE OUTHIER...ACCOMPAGNE S DE M. CELSIUS.Folding engraved map & 9 folding engraved plates. xxiv, [4], 184 pp. 8vo, cont. speckled calf (corners a bit worn & joints a little rubbed), spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. First edition of the first confirmation of Newton's prediction that the earth is flattened at the poles - a proof which was fatal to the Cartesian hypothesis. In 1735, Maupertuis led the famous expedition to Lapland to measure the length of a degree along the meridian of longitude. The results, which were published in this book, were in complete agreement with Newton's theory. Maupertuis (1698-1759), was the formost proponent of the Newtonian movement in France. Fine and crisp copy.
