Chemistry. Dr. Lyon Playfair. (Statesmen series).

Born 1818, Dr. Lyon Playfair was a noted Scottish scientist and parliamentarian. He became a distinguished authority on hygiene and diet. He was appointed Special Commissioner to the 1851 Great Exhibition. In 1853, he became Secretary of the Department of Science. By 1858, he returned to Edinburgh University as chemistry professor. From 1873-1874 he served as Postmaster- General. He later took the title of 1st Baron Playfair of St. Andrews. [Biographical text accompanies caricature.]
