RUSSELL W. PORTER: 1871-1949. Architect, artist and mechanical/optical instrument designer and maker. Recruited in 1928 by G. E. Hale to work on design aspects of the 200-inch Palomar telescope; held the position of Research Associate in Optics and Instrumental Design at Caltech 1928-42. Made designs for three campus buildings related to work on the 200-inch telescope (machine shop, astrophysics lab, optical shop). Developed "cutaway" drawing technique.
