Rare Book Collection
Johannes Kepler

Inscribed copy from the publisher Christoph Gruner to his sister-in-law Marie Müller, Christmas 1868. In box with Kepler memorabilia, including small portraits of Kepler and his wife; a photo of Kepler's death house in Regensburg (inscribed also to Marie Müller from Gruner); a photo of the Kepler monument in Weil der Stadt (Kepler's birthplace); additional copies of the book's frontispiece portrait of Kepler and the Kepler family crest. Also included is an obituary pamphlet for Gruner (d. 2/29/1872).

Regarding the history of its publishing: Johannes Kepler, Vier Bucher in drei Theilen, written by Edmund Reitlinger and Carl Voldemar von Neumann, edited by C. Gruner, and published by Carl Gruninger in Stuttgart in 1868; this 1st edition (where only Gruner's name appears) was to be the first part of a larger, 4-book, 3-volume Kepler biography, the original vision being Reitlinger's. However, due to editing disagreements between Gruner and Reitlinger, Reitlinger withdrew his participation and the other volumes were never written.
