George Fordham, born 1837, came from a family of jockeys--his father and three brothers all in the profession. He was considered Britain's champion jockey from 1855 to 1863, scoring his greatest number of wins of 165 in 1862. He won the Derby in 1879. Quote of the times: Up to 1881, he had ridden 2382 winners. [Biographical text accompanies caricature.]
