Second edition, englarged (1st ed.: 1837). One of the central figures in Victorian science, Whewell (1794-1866), master of Trinity College, Cambridge, was deeply involved in the reform of university education in Britain. He was aware of many of the weak points of the Cambridge system, and tried to widen the course and raise the aims of the teachers.
