The Archivist

Judith R. Goodstein

imageDr. Judith Goodstein is University Archivist and faculty associate at Caltech. After receiving her BA at Brooklyn College and her PhD at the University of Washington, she taught history at Cal State Dominguez Hills and UCLA, while building from scratch an archive and rare book collection in the history of science that attracts researchers from around the globe. In recent years, she has also taught courses at Caltech, including the Scientific Revolution and Forbidden Knowledge.

In addition to her responsibilities as University Archivist at Caltech, Dr. Goodstein has served as historical consultant and scriptwriter for The Mechanical Universe, a physics telecourse funded by the Annenberg Foundation/Corporation for Public Broadcasting; Executive producer for "Arnold O. Beckman: The Man behind the Machines," a television videotape; and created, wrote, and narrated historical vignettes on "Airtalk: The Caltech Edition," broadcast monthly on KPCC and simulcast on cable television, 1988–1992.

Her fields of research include the history of chemistry, mathematics in Italy during the 19th and 20th centuries, and modern American science. Dr. Goodstein has lectured widely on these topics, both in the United States and abroad, and she is the author of a large number of articles, monographs, and invited papers. Her books include Millikan's School (Norton, 1991), Feynman's Lost Lecture (Norton, 1996), written with her husband, Professor David Goodstein, and The Volterra Chronicles: the Life and Times of an Extraordinary Mathematician, 1860–1940 (American Mathematical Society, 2007).

Dr. Goodstein served as Caltech Registrar from 1989 to 2003.
